On the Easel
Life Lessons with 4th and 5th Graders

Tuesday December 3rd, I arrived at Northwood Elementary School.  As I began to set up for a program that I was doing for Fourth and Fifth graders there was this huge wave of emotion that began to come over me.  First of all, it was nearly sixty years ago I was one of these children that would be let out of class to come and hear a program by an artist.

For me it began around the age of eight.  The dream of being an artist.  I was in the third grade at Boone Trail High School in Mamers, NC.  I had recently arrived in Harnett County when my Aunt and Uncles came to get me and my sister Elizabeth from a naval base in Newport, Rhode Island.  At the age of 36 my mother had a massive stroke and her siblings stepped in to care for us.

Growing up on a tobacco farm in Mamers was quite the contrast to the naval base I had come from. But Aunt Kate adopted me as her own and for the next few years I was exposed to a humble yet authentic lifestyle.

Insecurities did arise but art was a vehicle that allowed me to escape and dream my challenges away.  In third grade one of my teachers was so impressed with a crayon drawing I did of Mt. Fuji that she entered it into the NC State Fair.  To my shock and excitement it won first prize for best art for my age.   That was the beginning of it all.

From there art was always a tool that I used for extra credit in school.  I would constantly illustrate and add drawings to my homework and reports.  I was never gifted academically but art, oh yeah, that was my talent and I leveraged it for a lifetime.

"It just takes time, Honey"

That was my message to these young admires.  The greatest teacher along life’s path are the mistakes you’re going to make.  Each and every day when I paint, I stumble, back up, cover up and then out of the midst of many strokes and washes the images I create begin evolve.  It’s magical but you can’t give up.  So many times we are almost on the forefront of success, it’s just one more step away if we will persist.   Another way put is, “It just takes time, Honey”.  Those were sound words of advice from my mom.   She was amazing, even after her debilitating stroke she persevered and had a wonderful life with many admires.

"Be a good listener"

My second bit of advice came from Pops.  He was a 21 year naval veteran that recognized being a good listener was the forefront to moving ahead in life.  How often do we give a glance during a conversation only to be preoccupied in our own world.  Such a shame when we have the opportunity to glean from a mentor.  It’s a valuable tip that I constantly remind myself to utilize.

"Remember where you come from"

Sound words from my Aunt Kate.  Ah, how often do we want to forget our past.  I know you might be saying I don’t want to look back on where I came from.  I too had that emotions but we do need to put a stake in the ground and reflect.  It helps to put life in perspective.  Roots are important as we build our family and career.  What was a challenging time during my early years led to one of my most popular books and film “Carolina Preserves”.

In conclusion as the students where leaving I was asking if they enjoyed themselves and what there favorite part was.  A young lad in the fifth grade said "getting out of math class", that was my favorite part.  I think I add honesty to my list as well!

Success seems to be largely a matter of hanging on after others have let go.

--William Feather (1889-1981)

2019 has been a transformational year.  What I mean by that is that I have been deviating from my traditional watercolors to acrylics.  I have literally gone back to school!  While they are both water based mediums they are not even remotely related as cousins.  Watercolors have a breadth and luminosity to them that are unmatched when masterfully handling the medium with wet on wet techniques allowing the paper to reflect the light back at your eye.

Today I have a new love affair.  Acrylic paints challenge me.  They literally kick my butt at times and keep me humble.  That might not be a place where you care to be, but after creating more than 3500 watercolors in my career it became second nature.  I felt like I could literally paint with my eyes closed.  I became too comfortable.

Changing mediums has breathed a new dimension into my work that I'm grateful for.  It puts me on the fence, makes me earn it, so to speak.  And along the way there are pitfalls but there are also some delightful surprises that I never see coming.

I thought I would simply share a bit of those intimate moments when the battle is on.

This show RE-IMAGINED is a marvelous tac as I have challenged myself with the new medium of acrylics.  It's a formidable foe that keeps me on my toes and test me each and everyday as I set a new canvas upon my easel.  It can be manipulated with a broad variety of techniques and has a latitude that allows me to present my vision in a bold new way.

These new creations are boundless in their depth, convey a provocative mood with filtered sunlight and draw you into some special sanctuaries that I've come across and Re-imagined.

I've created a collection of daring new contemporary paintings that are lush with stunning textures, balance and composition. An extraordinary compliment to this multicolored exhibition.

I’m very excited to return to my native Moore County for an extra special show to celebrate the Old North State. The “North Carolina Beautiful” art show will completely fill Broadhurst Gallery in Pinehurst, with more than 50 new paintings celebrating North Carolina’s beautiful seasons and topography. This exhibition is diverse in subject matter and each painting is captured with a variety of exciting new techniques that I have been mastering during this year.  The Pilot newspaper has done a wonderful feature about it.

Gardens are the essence of my show. Tranquil early morning sunrises to secret peaceful hideaways that one stumbles upon are the subjects that have intrigued me for more than 40 years. These paintings remain a constant reminder of how spectacular North Carolina is with all of its natural treasures.

Coupled with the sale of these originals paintings, I will be autographing copies of my coffee table book “North Carolina-Beautiful” during the opening weekend.  As you flip through the pages you imagine yourself hiking the majestic North Carolina mountains, soaking up local culture near historical landmarks or simply walking the shores of our pristine beaches.

Judy Broadhurst, owner of Broadhurst Gallery, has been showcasing great contemporary artists since its conception. They feature fine art for private and corporate collectors and all are welcome to come and enjoy this extraordinary show. The gallery is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 11 AM-5 PM; Saturday 1-4 PM; Sundays and evenings by appointment (call 910-295-4817).

I look forward to returning to Pinehurst and sharing this colorful collection of my latest artwork. I have always considered North Carolina and “artist paradise”. I hope you will join us and let me share my interpretations with you.

WHY VISIT PINEHURST

HERE'S FIVE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS TO DO

  • While visiting the show, I invite you to explore the charming Village of Pinehurst.  Its a great day trip from Greensboro, Charlotte or Raleigh.

  • Of course there is golf!  One of the nations best is Pinehurst No. 2 but Pine Needles or Mid Pines are excellent as well.  A stellar dinner or lunch can be had at the Carolina Hotel.  I was a waiter there when I was a student at Sandhills Community College!

  • If you're driving from the Triad a swing through Seagrove on the way back to stop and see my friend Ben Owen at his pottery studio.

  • If you're driving from the Triangle stop in Cameron for some epic antiquing.

  • To see more of the artists of Moore County, stop by the Arts Council Gallery  https://www.mooreart.org/visual/upcoming-art-exhibits/
